About Greg Odo
Greg Odo was born on may 25th, 1963 at Ovoko in Nsukka, Nigeria. He hails fro, Akwari in Ehalumona, Nsukka, Enugu State of Nigeria. As a son of a head teacher, his Primary education was in many schools due to frequent transfers of teachers then. He did his secondary education at ST. Aidan's Secondary School at Umuezeoka, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. he graduated in English Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and was awarded the British Council Book Prize for the best Creative Writer at the Silver Jubilee Celebration of the University. As an undergrauate, he was his departmental student librarian, illostrator and later Art Editor of the Departmental Journal, "THE MUSE". He also contributed poems for publication in Omabe, which was edited by Prof. Ossie Enekwe and Mrs. Patricia Nwoga ( lecturers in the department). He was appointed into the Students' Union Editorial Board as an associate Editor and elected secretary of the Board.He was also a member of a few sociocultural clubs in the University including dramatic society, literary discuss groups, reggae movement and youth solidarity on Southern Africa.
He did his national youth service at Federal Training Centre in Maiduguri, Borno State. His creative drive gave rise to further explorations in paintings, drawings and poetry that he started earlier in life. After hid national service, he was drafted into another state service called Anambra State Volunteer Corps in 1986. He organized theatre workshops, fine and applied arts workshops and presented activities at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Division, Enugu. He designed stage drops for theatre production at the Government House Enugu. and for productions at the sub-department of dramatic art, UNN. During this period, he was invited and he participated twice in the Nigerian German Print workshop with exhibitions at Nsukka, Lagos, and Hamburg Germany [1986-1987]. It was organized by Geothe Institute. He was later appointed to teach in Secondary Schools at Nsukka.
In 1987, he had a joint exhibition with the sculptor and lecturer Okay Ikenegbu at the British Council in Enugu: Art and the cycle of life. The following year, he had another joint exhibition with Olu Oguibe [PhD] at Oputa street, UNN: Art on the street. in 1989, he was appointed sub editor of Uwa Ndi Igbo: Journal of Igbo Life and Culture published by Chinua Achebe. The same year, he had a solo exhibition at the United Nations Information Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos. In 1990, he got a job at Grant Advertising [Nig] Ltd. as a copywriter and he moved down to Lagos to work. In 1991, he had a solo outing at the Soviet Cultural Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos. It was supported by TANHIGH HOLDINGS and Chief Alhaji Abdulaziz Chivuzo Udeh. In 1992, he worked with Dragon House Advertising [Nig] Ltd, Onigbongbo, Maryland, Lagos as head of Creative. In 1993, he was invited by the Africa Centre, Covent Garden, London to exhibit. It was recommended for tour. He was at the Bush House, the broadcasting house of BBC, London. He returned to Nigeria at the end of the tour and after the social/political atmosphere was declared safer for his return to Nigeria. He teaches English and Literature at Obimo-Nsukka.
